Where Is the Matoaka Amphitheatre?

K-Train here again. Films decided to be excellent stewards of your SA dollars, and we decided not to pay the Blue Talon for the use of their screen. Thus, the movie I previously alluded to will now be at.... BUM BUM BUM...
Lake Matoaka!!!!!
Exciting right? We are looking to follow up on the success of Friday the 13th with another scary movie. So find your teddy bears, your blankets, and Zombie Survival Guide, because it's going to be fun. I also hear the Amphitheater is home to disillusioned, chainsaw-wielding premed students... spooky yea?

MUSIC

Cherished fans,
This seems like a terrific way to update the campus as to the music committee's latest triumphs and upsets. We're working on finalizing our spring semester right now, and it's proving tricky yet exciting! Hopefully this blog can render our process more transparent and easier to understand.
We have in our budget means to book two shows at the Lake Matoaka Amphitheater this spring. At the moment we are still working on finalizing the second of those concerts, but we recently received some disappointing news. We put an offer in on The Decemberists right around Christmas and gave them ample time to respond. When we make an offer, it's basically an officially drafted document that we send out to the band's management saying what dates we have available for the show, how much we are willing to pay the band, what the specs are for the venue, etc. It's an organized and effective method for communicating to an artist that we are interested in having them perform on campus while at the same time giving them a wealth of information about the proposed concert.
Unfortunately, however, the Decemberists had to reject our offer. This is a pretty normal occurrence; in fact it's rare that the first artist we reach out to responds and accepts. Thankfully this was not due to a financial battle, though often it's the case that an artist demands more than we are able to pay. This is a very typical example of extenuating circumstances out of UCAB's control getting in our way and discouraging us from booking the band of our choice.
However, fear not! We have submitted a second, new offer to another artist! We are currently in negotiations with this second artist, and though at first it seemed fairly certain that we would be disappointed again, our management liaison has suggested that there is a possibility that artist would be interested. We'll keep you posted as soon as we hear for certain!
Thanks to all members of campus who are keeping up with our process and offering your feedback along the way. It's great to hear from you!
Cheers,
The Music Committee

Homebrew!

Friends,
Homebrew is awesome. You know what else is awesome? Beer. You know what's MOST awesome? The fact that you can now use flex points to buy beer in Lodge One during Homebrew (if you're 21, of course!). Domestic brews are 3 flex dollas, imported brews are 4 flex dollas. No home brews, sadly and ironically. But regardless, Homebrew+ Meal Plan Beer = a wonderful thing. Come out! Every other Thursday!
The next epic Homebrew event is THIS THURSDAY, Feb. 21. The theme is "StalloneBrew." Wear your red bandana around your head to show your appreciation for Rambo, jog up some stairs to show your appreciation for Rocky. It will be an event for the times.
Starts at 8pm in Lodge One, and the lineup is:
8 -- Ian Kloo (a man, a guitar, a lovely voice)
9 -- Eddie Charlton (great jams and lots of street cred)
10 -- Kelly Bodie (short poems to tug at your heartstrings)
10:25 -- Dan Piepenbring (a performance art experiment -- he's going analog)

You really should come by. Did i mention you can flex a brew?

With love from your Homebrew Chair,
Cait Smith

P.S. I'd like to take a poll, related to this week's Homebrew theme. What's everyone's favorite Stallone movie? Your choices are:
a) Rocky (any of them)
b) Rambo (any of them)
c) Daylight
d) Death Race 2000
e) Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over

Interns

Hi Everyone!

So far this semester the UCAB Interns committee has brought you the exciting magic of magician Jay Mattioli and given you a chance to indulge in the guilty pleasure of trashy reality TV but we're just getting warmed up. Coming up this Saturday, February 23 we have Dorm Cooking 101 where you can learn how to create delicious dishes with the meager resources and time available in college life. The event will feature both student showcases and recipes by a professional chef. Then, for a night of gambling with class, come to our James Bond Casino Night on March 15. Finally, remember summer nights as a kid running around the neighborhood playing manhunt? Bring that feeling to the 'Burg with Manhunt on Old Campus on April 4. Be sure to let us know if you have and suggestions for questions about any of our events. We hope to see you soon!

Comedy

Hi Everyone!
Annie Hughes here. First, thanks for checking out our new blog! We're so cutting edge :) Comedy has had a very busy start to the semester. We’ve brought two lodge1 comedians, Taylor Williamson and Jen Kober. Comedy also brought B.J. Novak the first weekend in February. Thanks to everyone who came out for that, we had a sold out show! We teamed up with Contempo Cult to bring N.W.C. the following night. The group absolutely floored the audience with their unique approach to racial stereotypes.
We still have a lot of great events coming up in the next few months. March 15th we will have comedian Dan Cummins followed by a Def Comedy Jam. If you’re interested in competing for the title of best student stand-up comedian send an email to Ashlei (ajcook@wm.edu). Comedy is also bringing Pablo Francisco to PBK Hall March 25th. Tickets will go on sale after spring break.
Thanks for all of the great support this semester! Email us if you have any questions!

Films

Hey Williams and Marys,
Isn't this nice? I'm just checking in to say that our new feedback initiative on the Blockbusters was a huge success thanks to all of your input. As a result, a movie that we thought would be too far off the beaten path, Sweeney Todd, is now the March Blockbuster. It's been hard to get this kind of response, but I think we just needed a way to make it easier to get your opinion, and for the process to be more transparent. Anyway, we are currently working on a movie at Prince George Street, but we are running into some money difficulties for getting an outdoor screen rental.
If you are interested in anything, or have any advice/comments, make sure to check out the Love it? Hate it? Rate it! feedback form on the UCAB website at http://www.wm.edu/ucab/index.php/event/loveithateit.

Publicity here!

The Publicity committee went "flyering" tonight - we met at the Daily Grind, divided up over 250 flyers, and bravely took off in the rain to make sure that every inch of campus (the units, swem, wawa, hunt, and dupont) was covered. Woo!

WELCOME!

Hey guys--
This is the first of many posts on a blog that will give you an insiders look at UCAB. We will be posting discussions of committees -- straight from the mouths of the members --, event information, and even ideas that are in the works.
The purpose of this blog is to allow those that are in UCAB to communicate with each other, and keep on top of what is going on. It is also supposed to allow those that are not in UCAB to get a sense of what we do on a daily basis, and even comment on some of what we are up to. Hopefully, both in UCAB and outside of UCAB people will start to get an understanding for what we do, how we do it, and why certain events occur and certain events don't.
