Comedy Cancellation

Hey guys!

The Comedy Committee just wanted to send you all a quick message to let you know that Blake Clark has had to cancel his show with us on November 21st for personal reasons. Alonzo Bodden, the comedian who was performing with him, will still be coming and performing. We are currently searching for another comedian to go with Alonzo to complete our Night Of Comedy. We will keep you all posted!

Jens Lekman

We're still reeling over here after a wildly successful Homecoming show this past Saturday! But, we have little time to gloat as our next concert, Jens Lekman in the Chesapeake on November 8th! The show is free to all students with a W&M ID and ten dollars to everyone else. Buy tickets here.

Sweden's most eligible batchelor/international popstar will not be so silent on November 8th. With the wit of Oscar Wilde, the voice of a Swedish-inflected Morrissey, the guitar of Paul Simon, a sample-laden, 21st century take on Phil Spector's production, the heart of Tiny Tim Cratchit, and the Swedeness of ABBA, Jens Lekman crafts earnest, saccharine pop songs that leave you torn between empathy and handclaps. His woebegone songs turn heartbreak into optimism in the twist of a phrase. He's an adult trapped in the heart of a child, yet where there would be naivete, Jens espouses a worldweary optimism. Lush romance tinges the world of Jens Lekman, a world the listener can't help but be seduced into as well. Who can turn the world on with his smile? Jens Lekman.

Now Taking Applications for Spring Late Nite Funding

W&M Student Orgs,

Want free money? Want a chance to get your name out there? Want to dream up a crazy event and entertain all of campus with it? Here's your chance!
UCAB is now accepting Late Nite funding applications for the spring. The funding can be used to sponsor a fun event any Friday or Saturday night from 9pm-2am. Preference will be given to events that create a fun, social atmosphere in Lodge 1 and the event must be open to the whole student body, but other than that the sky is the limit. So get creative!

To learn more visit www.wm.edu/ucab or email me at ucab.late.nite@gmail.com. Also, there will be short informational sessions November 1 and 2 at 5pm in the UC Colony. I strongly recommend that every organization send a representative to one of these meetings to learn how this great opportunity works.

Note: We've been having some technical difficulties with the website, but you can also find the application at http://web.wm.edu/ucab/lnpapp2.php or email ucab.late.nite@gmail.com for a word doc application.

Homecoming Finalized, Cool Kids Added!

After Rogue Wave's unfortunate cancellation last week, UCAB is thrilled to announce that we've added The Cool Kids to the Homecoming lineup! The Ting Tings will headline and The Cool Kids will open.

The Cool Kids are one of the most exciting upcoming groups in hip-hop and a phenomenal live act. Check them out at their website and myspace . They've been labeled "Chicago's next great hip-hop duo" by Rolling Stone Magazine and "One of the most promising new groups to emerge in recent years" by the Los Angeles Times.

Booking an act this good on such short notice is astonishing. I hope you're all as thrilled with our now finalized Homecoming concert as we are!

See you at 8pm on October 25th at Lake Matoaka Amphitheater! For everyone without a W&M ID, the concert is $10. Bring your W&M ID and get in for FREE.

Rogue Wave update

Rogue Wave, the band originally scheduled to headline the Homecoming concert, recently canceled its appearance here due to the injury of its lead singer. The Music Committee is working around the clock to find an alternative to either open or headline with the Ting Tings. For the most up-to-date information, check back to this blog frequently. I will be updating it with any info that comes our way.

We here at UCAB send our sincerest apologies to everyone who was excited about Rogue Wave playing William and Mary. This is an unfortunate circumstance that was entirely out of our control. For those of you who are worried, yes, there will still be a Homecoming show and, yes, the Ting Tings are still set to play.

Tomorrow morning we will put in an offer to The Cool Kids, an amazing up-and-coming hip-hop group. Everyone keep your fingers crossed.

We are committed to providing you with an outstanding Homecoming concert. I hope to have good news shortly.

The Dark Knight

Due to its unprecedented success in theatres, The Dark Knight is not available for Movies at Matoaka on October 24th. Warner Brothers will not release this film to college campuses until mid-November. In light of this unexpected situation, UCAB Films will instead screen The Dark Knight in November. UCAB Films will still hold Movies at Matoaka on October 24th. We will screen a classic horror flick, The Shining. So bring out your blankets to the Matoaka Amphitheater and UCAB will provide the hot chocolate and cider!

NIGHT OF COMEDY

Hey guys!

The UCAB Comedy committee has finished finalizing our plans for our huge Night of Comedy on November 21st! It will feature Alonzo Bodden, the winner of Last Comic Standing, and Blake Clark. Blake is an incredible comedian featured in a number of Adam Sandler movies- he also had a role on Boy Meets World, playing Shawn's dad. We are so excited to bring these two very different comedians together for one hilarious night.

The event will be in the Chesapeake room of the Sadler Center, and tickets can be purchased at the PBK Box office. They will be ten dollars a person with a WM ID.

Also, as a quick reminder, next Saturday night there will be a Lodge One Comedian! Rip Michaels will be performing in Lodge One at 9pm. Come on out for a great show!

TribeVision October Line-Up

Hi W&M!

The TribeVision (Channel 52) October line-up has been successfully running for the past week!

The line-up includes classics such as Back to the Future, Breakfast at Tiffany's and Psycho, as well as some new favorites, including Knocked Up, The Bourne Ultimatum, Baby Mama and Batman Begins.

We're trying a new format, with one movie title running several times a day, twice a month. Give us some feedback on this change.

Check out http://web.wm.edu/ucab/index.php/page/p/44 for the full schedule and join the facebook group for updates.

We order movies one month in advance so please tell us what movies you want to watch. Movies that are out on DVD are open for suggestion.

Enjoy!

NACA South Board of Excellence

Nine members of the UCAB Executive Board along with our three advisers just returned from an exciting four day trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee for the 2008 NACA (National Association for Campus Activities) South Conference. We were one of about 60 Programming Boards at the conference from states in the Southern region of the US.

Each day was packed with different activities that included Educational Sessions on how to improve our board and its programming, Showcases of talent ranging from music acts to comedians to break dancing groups, and networking opportunities to connect with other schools in our region. We saw so many quality performers and have some definite prospects for events next semester that include two slam poets and possible Fridays @ Five musicians.

Prior to Chattanooga, programming boards were able to submit applications for awards with the top award being the Board of Excellence (BOE). A small number of schools (William & Mary being one of them) were then chosen to make a presentation to judges at the conference. On the last night there, all of the attendees gathered for the closing banquet and awards ceremony. When the BOE award presenters began to talk about the winning school, mentioning a programming board of 150 members with new sustainability initiatives and an iconic squirrel mascot, we all could not contain our excitement. William & Mary's UCAB is NACA South's Board of Excellence for 2008, which is a huge honor! Also at the banquet, Katy Lang, our Director of the General Board, was given the 2008 Student Leader Award, and it couldn't be more deserved.

On Sunday, we made the 11 hour drive back to Williamsburg with a necessary dinner stop at Chipotle. We are all really excited to tell the rest of UCAB and William & Mary about the prestigious award.
