MUSIC

Cherished fans,
This seems like a terrific way to update the campus as to the music committee's latest triumphs and upsets. We're working on finalizing our spring semester right now, and it's proving tricky yet exciting! Hopefully this blog can render our process more transparent and easier to understand.
We have in our budget means to book two shows at the Lake Matoaka Amphitheater this spring. At the moment we are still working on finalizing the second of those concerts, but we recently received some disappointing news. We put an offer in on The Decemberists right around Christmas and gave them ample time to respond. When we make an offer, it's basically an officially drafted document that we send out to the band's management saying what dates we have available for the show, how much we are willing to pay the band, what the specs are for the venue, etc. It's an organized and effective method for communicating to an artist that we are interested in having them perform on campus while at the same time giving them a wealth of information about the proposed concert.
Unfortunately, however, the Decemberists had to reject our offer. This is a pretty normal occurrence; in fact it's rare that the first artist we reach out to responds and accepts. Thankfully this was not due to a financial battle, though often it's the case that an artist demands more than we are able to pay. This is a very typical example of extenuating circumstances out of UCAB's control getting in our way and discouraging us from booking the band of our choice.
However, fear not! We have submitted a second, new offer to another artist! We are currently in negotiations with this second artist, and though at first it seemed fairly certain that we would be disappointed again, our management liaison has suggested that there is a possibility that artist would be interested. We'll keep you posted as soon as we hear for certain!
Thanks to all members of campus who are keeping up with our process and offering your feedback along the way. It's great to hear from you!
Cheers,
The Music Committee
